Dear Students, Staff, and Faculty!
Welcome to Academic Writing and Presentations at the Department of Foreign Languages. We support you through services and instruction based on student-centered and client-centered writing pedagogy. You are invited to participate in our workshops, counseling, and courses on different aspects of writing and presenting your work.
To be successful throughout your course of study and in your careers, you will have to communicate and write in English for multiple academic, professional, and personal purposes. Writing serves as a gateway for employment and career advancement in the modern world. Our goal is to help you with this lifelong pursuit. Through our instruction and counseling, we provide you with the knowledge and skills that you can apply to your current and future projects. We devote our effort and energy to enriching your learning experience and to helping you become successful learners and self-directed, confident writers and communicators.

Our instruction and services are tailored to support diverse learning styles and writing needs. We can assist you with a variety of projects that include but are not limited to

  • Essays and research papers
  • Thesis and dissertation chapters
  • Summaries and abstracts
  • Proposals
  • Reports
  • Emails and business correspondence
  • Presentations and speeches

By inviting you to participate in a dialogue and valuing your voices, we strive to build a community around writing, teaching, and learning on the TU Dortmund University campus. It is important to realize that we are not a drop-off editing service, and we expect our clients and course participants to be genuinely interested in and motivated to work on their writing projects and writing processes. We do not “fix” papers for them.

Our training and support formats include

Writing courses

Our 15-week writing courses invite you to work on papers and presentations in your own field by providing a framework that optimizes your writing processes. In addition, these courses allow for a teacher and peer feedback on your writing.

Workshops (2 - 4 days)

These workshops allow you to engage in an ongoing conversation about the craft of academic and professional writing. The sessions are organized as blocks of teacher input and in-class writing activities that intend to increase your authority and responsibility as writers and readers. In addition, these workshops alert you to the issues and challenges that accompany any good writing.

Short workshops (2 hours)

This type of workshop provides you with tips and strategies for managing your writing at different stages and for working on different parts of your papers. An interactive and dynamic setting of these workshops is a good place to start engaging with writing in a more efficient way.

PAULLA: An Autonomous Learning Writing Course

The purpose of this format is to provide writing support to clients seeking regular counseling and structured guided writing support. Much of teacher feedback on your writing can be provided electronically.

Individual counseling

We offer feedback on any type of academic or technical writing to all TU Dortmund University students, staff, and researchers. When attending your counseling session, please be realistic. Our goal is to help you discover your own approaches to creating and editing your drafts. We will not grade or edit your papers.

Please download the course catalog for the summer term 2021.

If you have any questions or suggestions about our writing offers, we are happy to assist you.
